What did it feel like when you earned your DTM and how did your celebrate?
Over the moon! I was on cloud 9 for 6 months. I had a celebratory dinner at a local restaurant with my toastmaster friends hosted by Watford Speakers.
What was your greatest personal achievement on the journey to your DTM and why is it so special to you?
My High Performance Leadership. It was work based. “To Develop peer review and self-review of teaching through video recording.” This had an ongoing benefit to colleagues, the students they teach and the patients treated by the students. It was a win-win situation which raised my profile at work and helped me on my Toastmaster’s journey
Who was the most influential mentor(s) on your journey and why?
Sandra Lawes DTM. She was one of the founder members of Watford Speakers, my home club, and she gave me a solid training in the TM Education Programme and all things Toastmasters.
Iain Hutchinson. He was a member of Watford Speakers when I joined and I followed in his footsteps as Sergeant at Arms, President and Area Governor. We went to Club Officer Training and took part in contests outside of our home club together.
Sandra and Iain were a constant source of support and encouragement throughout my journey to DTM.
Having achieved the highest educational award that TMI can bestow, what new goals are you looking forward to?
Developing my own workshops. Working through the new Pathways programme And building on Stand up. I took part in a course run by David Jones, another toastmaster, and have done a number of gigs.
What tips or advice do you have for members on the DTM journey?
Work through the programme and don’t procrastinate. Be realistic, do the best you can with the time available to you and you will learn from the evaluations given.
Say “yes” to any speaking opportunity, however scary. You will benefit and grow with each speech.
